Surface Preparation

Tank Surface Preparation

Primary surface preparation aims to remove surface contaminants (i.e. existing perished coatings & bitumen, deteriorated product, rust, and foreign matter).

The effectiveness of any tank coating depends on how thoroughly the substrate has been prepared prior to application. Mechanical adhesion occurs when the coating penetrates rough surfaces, bonding to the substrate by flowing into & filling pores and other surface irregularities.

GRP doesn't rely on adhesion to a near perfect steel, so surface preparation by means of thorough hand and power tool cleaning as defined in ISO 8501-1:2007 to grade St-2 is generally all that is required in most cases.

Technique

GRP Liner Technique

A practical and systematic approach is followed in the application of the GRP liner, resulting in a quality product with a nominal thickness of 3mm.

The GRP liner is applied by hand-lay or spray deposit technique using materials specific to requirements. The finished product offers a high impact, chemical and corrosion resistant material capable of accommodating structural movement with a life expectancy of 20 years.

Our tank liners can be warranted by an Insurance Backed Guarantee, offering 20 years peace of mind.
